NJ mayor, son accused of hacking website to stifle recall effort

The FBI arrested a New Jersey mayor and his son Thursday for allegedly hacking into an email account to take down a website that promoted a recall.

A criminal complaint said Joseph Roque, the 22-year-old son of West New York Mayor Felix Roque, 55, learned how to hack GoDaddy.com domains and email accounts after searching the Internet, Politico reports.

The pair allegedly used a hacked email account to cancel the domain of Recallroque.com, a site that criticized Roque.

Following the website removal, Felix Roque called the owner of the website and told him that it was the work of “high government officials and that everyone would pay for getting involved against Mayor Roque,” the complaint reads.

The Roques each face three charges: gaining unauthorized access to computers in furtherance of causing damage to protected computers; causing damage to protected computers; and conspiracy to commit those crimes, Politico reports.
