Many areas of the resort island of Phuket were flooded on Wednesday morning following heavy overnight rain, causing a 30-minute delay in the departure of a Thai Airways International flight and leaving a number of passengers stranded.
San Chantarawong, chief of the Phuket disaster prevention and mitigation office, said many roads were flooded this morning, but the water had gradually receded and was almost back to normal.
Heavily hit by the flood was Thepkasatri road, particularly at Satri Phuket School and Sam Kong intersections.
Out-bound traffic along Thepkasatri road to Phuket international airport was very slow and at a standstill in places. Parts of the road in tambon Koh Kaew were under one metre of water.
Thai Airways International flight TG 204, which was scheduled to depart Phuket at 10.55am, was delayed for about half an hour waiting for passengers. Despite the delay, many passengers still missed the flight. They were being reseated on other THAI flights.
Samak Luadwonghat, director of the highway office of Phuket, said Thepkasatri road was heavily inundated at four spots, all in tambon Koh Kaew. Four teams of highway workers were sent to the troubled spots to quickly drain the water.
He said those leaving the town proper were advised to use rural roads through Krathu municipality.
Elsewhere, parts of the Muang Mai - Pa Khlok road in front of Sithisunthorn Bamrung School were reported to be one metre under water.
Villages No 1, 4, 6 and 8 of tambon Pa Khlok were reported to be heavily flooded.
Tree Akradecha, the Phuket governor, went on an inspection trip to tambon Kamala in Krathu district at about 9.30am and found the water was receding.
In the area of Patong Beach,the intersection of Patong Hospital was one metre under water in the morning but the water had receded by this afternoon.
Punyawee Thongsiriseth, Phuket's public relations chief, said that in Phuket municipality the intersection at Satri Phuket School on Thepkasatri road had been flooded this morning. Also flooded were Klang, Yaowaraj, Ranong, Rasda, and Bangkok roads and Suriyadet circle.
