An SUV veered out of control and overturned in East Texas on Monday, killing five children - @dallasnews

The Associated Press is reporting that besides the four children killed, six more and two adults have been taken to hospitals. So that means everyone in the SUV was injured.

AP also reports that this was a family on their way to a waterpark. Horrifying.

Four children died this afternoon after an SUV crashed along Interstate 20 in Van Zandt County.

A Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said the GMC Envoy was carrying 12 people — more than it had seatbelts for — when it ran off the highway about 2 p.m. just west of FM 773 near Canton.

Nine people were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled into a ditch, landing upside down.

Three girls, ages 2, 6 and 13, died at the scene.

Several others were transported, including three children airlifted to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. One of those patients, a 5-year-old boy, was later pronounced dead.

Trooper Jean Dark, the DPS spokeswoman, said investigators didn’t yet know what caused the single-vehicle crash.

“There’s a language barrier between investigators and the occupants,” she said.

There were no child safety seats in the vehicle, she said.

Stay tuned for updates. Meantime, KLTV is on scene with a few more details.
