Suspected killer Jonathon Andrew Stenberg apprehended after a 6-day manhunt on the outskirts of Darwin - AAP

Suspected killer Jonathon Andrew Stenberg has been apprehended by Northern Territory Police after a six-day manhunt in Darwin's rural outskirts.

THE Northern Territory's Tactical Response Group is believed to have captured Stenberg at 3.08pm (CST) on Sunday.

Stenberg is wanted over the decapitation of NSW man Edward Kelly.

Mr Kelly's head has not been recovered. Police wanted Stenberg over the June 21 beheading of Mr Kelly, 54, at Broadwater on NSW's north coast.

Stenberg had been the subject of a large manhunt on Darwin's fringe since he was spotted by an off-duty policeman on Tuesday.

On Friday, police revealed that as well as a firearm, Stenberg's abandoned car, which was found on Tuesday, contained camping equipment, solar panels and long-life food.

It was believed the former Australian Defence Force engineer was planning on being self-sufficient in the bush for an extended period.

Northern Territory police will hold a press conference later on Sunday.
