Downed trees litter Queens, NY, after storm - @eyewitnessnyc

Web produced by Jennifer Matarese, Eyewitness News

New York City felt the brunt of the storm Monday as trees toppled, especially in Queens.

Darkness came with a vengeance in Hollis, Queens Tuesday night when a fallen tree on 191st St. took down the wires.

The dangerous area is now roped off until power crews can get to the problem. As rain fell and winds ripped through the area folks pretty much stayed inside hoping the landscape would stay intact and the power would stay on.

In Whitestone, trees began toppling even before the height of the storm blew through.

Two shady beauties on Sixth Avenue were left like beached whales.

Their crowns were resting on homes while their roots were left exposed to the air.

In College Point, the wind sliced a tree in half, sending chunks onto the sidewalk and front yard.

In the midst of all this mess, the real heroes were the cleanup crews with the Parks Department.

In less than an hour, they took a huge horizontal Linden tree, chopped it to pieces, mulched it to bits and even raked the homeowner's front lawn.

There wasn't a twig left.

They were efficient and thorough and left a freshly sawed stump as their calling card as they raced to the next disaster.
