Japan's lower house adopts resolution in protest of South Korean president's trip to disputed islands - Kyodo

TOKYO, Aug. 24, Kyodo

Japan's lower house adopted a resolution Friday in protest at South Korean President Lee Myung Bak's recent visit to disputed islets and his comments concerning the Japanese emperor.

South Korean control over the islets in the Sea of Japan, known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, constitutes an "illegal occupation" and Tokyo strongly urges Seoul to end it as soon as possible, the resolution, adopted with majority support from both ruling and opposition parties, says.

Criticizing Lee's call for Emperor Akihito to apologize for Japan's past colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula as "quite irreverent," the resolution also seeks the withdrawal of the remark.
