The far north Queensland city of Cairns will host the G20 meeting of finance ministers in 2014.

Cairns will host a meeting of G20 finance ministers in 2014.

With Brisbane set to host the G20 forum in two years, the far north Queensland city will also host the associated summit of finance chiefs prior to the main event.

Confirming the location on Sunday, Treasurer Wayne Swan said the finance chiefs meeting would be "very significant boost" to the local economy and could see as many as 2000 people travel to the region.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for north Queensland, and particularly far north Queensland, to showcase itself to the world," he told Network Ten.

He described far north Queensland as "the gateway to the emerging world in Asia".

Premier Campbell Newman welcomed the decision to officially announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Mr Swan in Cairns on Sunday.

"I know that Cairns will benefit greatly from this announcement," he told reporters at Airlie Beach.

"(It) spreads the financial, economic advantages of having G20 in Queensland.

"It means that not just the southeast of the state will see the attention of the international media."

Mr Newman said Cairns was chosen because it was a regional tourist city with the hotels and international airport needed to host the 2000 delegates and media expected to attend.
