Southwestern Colorado fire consumes 500-600 acres, forces evacuations - @denverpost

A fast-moving fire near Mancos, in southwestern Colorado, has consumed 500-600 acres and forced evacuations.

The Weber fire started on Bureau of Land Management property south of Mancos. Fire officials reported that at least 10 structures were threatened, and, Friday evening, evacuation orders were issued for the Elk Springs subdivision east of Mancos. At least one helicopter and two single-engine air tankers were dropping water and retardant, respectively, on the blaze.

A crew of firefighters from Idaho, which authorities said was "prepositioned" in the area, is also working on the fire.

Officials have set up an emergency line for information: 970-564-4999.

The Weber fire's smoke plume is visible as far away as Durango, and residents of the area are encouraged not to call 911 at the moment to report smoke.
