Rocket fire from Gaza has drawn Israeli airstrikes early Wednesday, shattering a brief cease-fire - Washington Post

JERUSALEM — Rocket fire from the Gaza Strip on southern Israel has drawn Israeli airstrikes, shattering a brief cease-fire.

The Israeli military says six rockets were fired early Wednesday and that Israeli aircraft struck seven targets. Since Tuesday, about 50 rockets have hit Israel, by the military’s count.

The Islamic Jihad militant group had said a truce would go into effect at midnight Tuesday, but it fell apart almost immediately.

The violence is the most serious in months, marring an informal cease-fire that has largely held since Israel and Gaza militants warred more than three years ago. Six Palestinians, including at least four militants, were killed this week in airstrikes and several Israelis have been wounded by rocket fire.

Still, neither side seems interested in seeing the violence spiral into all-out war.
