Police officer killed while serving summons in Springfield, MA - @cbs3springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

An officer has been killed in Springfield's Sixteen Acres neighborhood. The shooting happened after a call to the Lawton Arms apartment complex.

Sgt. John Delaney confirms to CBS 3 that the officer was killed in the line of duty. Sources say the officer was serving a summons to an apartment, and was shot when a man opened the door. The man then re-entered the apartment and shot his girlfriend before fatally shooting himself. The woman is in critical condition and undergoing surgery at Baystate Medical Center.

The names of the officer and man and woman involved have not been released. The flag outside police headquarters on Pearl Street has been lowered to half-mast.

A press conference has been scheduled for 6:00pm.
