The election for new President on July 19.

NEW DELHI: The President's election will be held on July 19 and the counting of votes will take place on July 21, four days ahead before incumbent Pratibha Patil completes her term as India's first lady President.

Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath said: "Election to President Office of India must be free and fair and the commission is taking all necessary steps in discharging its constitutional responsibility.

According to Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath:
* The EC has decided to appoint secretary general of Rajya Sabha as the returning officer for these elections.
* Notification to be issued on June 16
* Last day for nominations: June 30
* Scrutiny of nominations : July 2
* Last date for withdrawal: July 4
* Elections to be held on July 19
* Counting, if required, to be held on July 22
* Chief Electoral Officers of each state shall supervise and coordinate with assistant returning officers in state capitals.
