Suspect in custody in Etan Patz case

Updated at 7:17 a.m. ET

(CBS News) A man was in custody in the decades-old case of missing 6-year-old boy Etan Patz, New York police said Thursday morning, nearly 33 years to the day since he disappeared in downtown Manhattan.

The suspect, whom the police did not identify, made statements "implicating himself," according to a statement from New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

"CBS This Morning" will be covering this breaking news live. New York police expect to provide further information on the development in the case later Thursday.

After vanishing from a New York street May 25, 1979, Patz sparked a national outcry over missing children, becoming the first missing child whose picture was put on the side of a milk carton.

In April, investigators dug up a basement looking for evidence in the long ongoing investigation.
