JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli President Shimon Peres' office says the 88-year-old is undergoing surgery for a hernia discovered during his state visit to Canada.

Peres' spokesman Ayelet Frisch says that the hernia was discovered halfway through the president's week-long trip that started Sunday. She said Peres' personal doctor treated him there, and he continued with his work schedule as planned.

Peres was scheduled to return Friday. Frisch said that he came back to Israel as planned and was then taken to a hospital near Tel Aviv for surgery. She says he was "feeling fine" as he went in.

Peres, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, is known for his long work days. He is not known to suffer from any health problems.
